Not Me! Monday

Inspired by Mckmama.

Hello dear readers! Or reader. Whichever is correct. It is time for my second ever Not Me! Monday post. Here we go.

This past week, I most certainly did not continue my use of the vinegar solution. Those of you who read my last Monday's post will know what I am speaking of.

I also did not serve already prepared sirloin and mashed potatoes to our dinner guests. Nope. I would never do such a thing. I cook everything from scratch here in the Milburn household. I even grind our own wheat for bread and pasta.

I did not stay in the same clothes for close to 3 days. I would never do that. Even when I am sick, my motto is "fashion before comfort." Therefore, running a fever, I made sure to drag my lazy booty into the shower each and every morning; taking extra care to apply the make-up so that when I blew my nose for the hundredth time, I would still look beautiful.

I did not leave a disgusting trail of snotty kleenexes in whichever room I visited for any period of time. And that being said, I did not have to get a trash bag and scour the house for them. What a phenomenal waste of time and energy cleaning up after my own germs that would have been.

Running a fever and wishing that I could puncture a hole in my head to let out some of the congestion, I did not eat a huge bowl of chips and salsa just so I had something in my tummy to take some tylenol. That would have been a terribly bad thing to eat when you are sick. I definitely made sure that I went up to the kitchen and made myself some chicken noodle soup (from scratch, of course).

Speaking of soup, I did not call my mom and tell her how sick I was. I am a grown woman after all. And she did not run right over with a big pot of homemade chicken and rice soup.

I also did not spend a ridiculous amount of time watching episodes of Dawson's Creek. Which I absolutely, positively do not own. And I did not fast-forward almost every scene that includes the main character, Dawson, so that I could watch the scenes with Pacey and Joey. Why would I do that? I have never even seen that show, let alone watched it enough to have favorite characters. I am 26 years old and married with a daughter, after all.

This is the life....

I am currently sitting in my recliner with the shades open. The snow is falling very slowly, but just enough to make it pretty outside. Ahhh......
Miriam is sleeping next to me in her swing. She has a stuffy nose, so I have been trying to coax her to take a little bit longer naps than usual. She has been sleeping in her swing this week because of all the drainage at the back of her throat. Laying her on her back just wasn't working. She would wake up every hour coughing. But, in the swing, she sleeps hours on end. At first, I was hesitant to use it because I didn't want a new habit forming. But, in the end, you do what you gotta do and really......I don't think she will be 30 years old and still need to be rocked to sleep in the swing. It's not detrimental.
She has learned so much in this past week. I love to watch her deliberately grab a rattle and go cross-eyed staring at it with intentional and purposeful thought. Within 2 days, she grasped that if she shakes it, it will make noise. She's still working on the whole, 'not hitting myself in the head with it' thing, but I would say it's good progress.
We had Stephen and Monica over last night and were able to celebrate their recent engagement with them. It is so exciting and I love the fact that Miriam is getting another aunt. It was also fun watching Miriam through 'fresh eyes.' Stephen would point out funny things that she was doing (like whole body spasms when she gets excited about a toy) that we are so used to, we don't really notice that much anymore.
Miriam loves to be sung to. For Christmas, she got 3 Disney CD's and for some reason, she prefers those over anything else. She is lucky that she has 2 parents that went to Disney World on their Honeymoon. We listen to them in the car and if I sing to a couple of the songs, she calms down (because she HATES her car seat) and will usually fall asleep. That's how I got her to sleep for her nap. ha ha. 3 verses of Supercalifragilisticexpialidotious and she was off to La La Land. I don't really know if that is how they spell it because the CD is across the room and I am too lazy to get up. So let's pretend it's correct and you are all impressed with my correct spelling skills of made-up words.

Not Me! Monday

From now on, on Mondays, faithful reader of my blog, you can expect a post titled "Not Me! Monday." This idea taken from http://www.mycharmingkids.net/ will allow me to bare my soul to the blogging world with a list of things that there is no way in tarnation I have ever done, let alone done this past week. (Those clever enough to catch on will soon realize that the list is in fact, things that I have done.....you get the drift??)

So, without further ado, here is my first Not Me! Monday post.

This past week, I surely did not use up an entire gallon of vinegar in my laundry, hoping to take out the sour smell from them sitting too long. Nope, not me. In this house, laundry is done on a strict Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedule. Clothes are folded and placed in their drawers promptly after the buzzer sounds on the dryer. In fact, they are usually still warm.

Oh, and speaking of not using vinegar....I certainly did not use it on multiple loads.

I also did not have a postpartum meltdown as stated in my previous post. And it most certainly did not result in me sleeping down the basement for a couple of nights just to have some time by myself. And I did not decide that henceforth, any meltdown following the birth of my daughter will be referred to as postpartum.......even when she is 30.

I did not blow on my infant daughter's tummy even though I am extremely sick with a head cold; risking her health and hoping that my magic breast milk will keep her away from the germs, just so I could hear her sweet laugh.

And, once again, speaking of breastmilk.....I certainly did not taste my own breast milk to ensure I did not get sick from it; in order to make sure the milk I pumped was ok for Miriam. I would never do that. It is weird and gross. And, oddly enough, I am not the only person who didn't do that this past week.

That concludes this week's Not Me! Monday post.

Please still be my friend.

Meltdown of the century

And no, I am not referring to global warming here, folks. I am talking about the ugly crying, heaving chested, snot river flowing, uncontrollable, close to vomit-inducing, sick of a dirty house, tired of being a wife, mother and homemaker meltdown. I had it. And it won't be my last one, I am willing to place money on it. Would anyone care to join me?
Let me set the scene. House a mess. Husband and wife having major miscommunications regarding romance, job duties and expectations. Baby daughter only wanting to be held all day long. Stretch it out off and on over a week or so. Yep. Thus began the meltdown.
No, my marriage is not in trouble. Although, this being our fourth year of marriage, I can honestly say that the first year was NOT the hardest. We are best friends, so our first year was cake. We were so excited to be together. So happy to not have to leave each other at the end of the night. But, now we have a baby. And she has been a lot of work. It is a challenging time and a slow churning process, (definition of churning process: a time period in which two people are constantly trying to blend together to become one final product.) but I look forward to the challenge. It may sound ridiculous to say that, but I feel as though our years of friendship have well prepared us to face some tough challenges in our marriage without ripping each other's faces off. I know that God uses these churning processes to make us into the unit that He intends for us to become. And this won't be the last rough year we go through, I am sure.
So, that was the first big thing in my heart and mind that spurred me toward the meltdown.
Luckily, Daniel read the cues well and did much to encourage me to have some 'alone' time. I even got a cozy bed all to myself in the basement where I got to watch episodes of Gilmore Girls and pretend that I lived in Stars Hollow and was attending a quirky town meeting. If you haven't seen Gilmore Girls, I would like to encourage you to contact me and borrow a season or two. I guarantee you will want to visit Luke's diner where we can share witty banter over a cup of coffee. It will be wonderful.
Three days later, I am feeling much better (besides a wicked sore throat bug that has taken up residence in my body.......which really gives me another excuse to have to sleep in my cozy downstairs bed so I don't get my little family sick.)
All this being said, I am so thankful for a husband who understands the value of alone time. He has had his share of the cozy basement. Although, he never visited Stars Hollow no matter how many times I insisted he would enjoy his time there. I love his friendship and still can't wait to see him at the end of the day. It is just taking some adjustment to incorporate our third family member.
Speaking of Miriam....I am also thankful that she has become the sweet little girl that she is. I love that she smiles when she sees me (even if she is supposed to be sleeping and working very hard at perfecting that fake cry). Daniel says she plays her card way too quickly.
The last 4 months have been the most challenging of my entire life. However, I am so thankful for how well equipped I feel to help others. It is a desire I never expected to feel, but I so look forward to seeing how the Lord will use this desire. I have developed this passion for new mothers. A passion that I am going to pray the Lord shows me how he wants it used. I want to be an encouragement to reassure other mothers that things don't always go perfectly. You aren't always thrilled to be with your baby. You may not immediately look back at your labor and think to yourself: "That was so worth it." And that's ok. It doesn't mean you are a horrible person or a bad mother right from the start. At some point, you will look back and know that it was worth it, but it may come slowly. Down with the guilt! I want other mothers to know that it's ok to need to be away from your baby and husband for a couple nights. You aren't weird. It doesn't mean you are on the road to divorce. You are human and you need to be refreshed. It happens. Even if people don't always talk about it.
Hold on just a minute while I step off my soapbox.
Ok, I'm down.
It was a high soapbox. I wanted lots of people to hear me.

Christmas Past.....

Christmas is over! I can not believe it. It didn't feel the least bit like Christmas this year. I think that could be due to a number of things.
One....it is the first time in 10 years that I haven't worked leading up to Christmas or even on Christmas Eve.
Two....even though it is our fourth Christmas married, we have yet to create our own traditions, so nothing really feels like Christmas.
And Three....I had a baby 3 months ago. Yeah...pretty much nothing feels normal yet. ha ha.
Christmas feelings aside, we had a good holiday and are looking forward to the new year. Resolutions to be made (and broken), more celebrations in store, more birthdays, anniversaries. Ahhh....there really are things to look forward to.
Miriam gets more aware everyday and I LOVE watching her discover things. I am genuinely excited when she learns something new. She got a jumper chair from Nana and Papa Hall and we are working on her practicing holding her head up for long periods of time and trying to use her legs. The girl is so lazy, I don't know if she'll ever crawl, let alone walk. She absolutely refuses to stand on her legs when you hold her up. And when you put her in her jumper chair, she lays her head back in the seat and just doesn't move. So ridiculous.
She still loves her sun toy that blinks and plays songs and she has started to sing along with high pitched noises. She is also learning to imitate noises you make and copy you when you stick your tongue out. If you talk to her, she will coo back at you forever. I think that she truly believes she is talking to you and you completely understand everything she is saying.
Her sleeping at night has gradually increased, which is totally fabulous. Last night was a 9 hour stretch and the night before that was 10 hours. We are still working on the whole nap thing during the day, but other than that.....things are going wonderful. She still has bouts with colic in the evenings, but there is much improvement.
