Date night!
Tomorrow night, Daniel and I are going on a date. A real date where we get dressed up. My mother and father-in-law bought us tickets to The Phantom of the Opera in Denver. We are really excited. That is Daniel's favorite musical and I have never seen it live. I've only ever seen the movie. So, that is going to be fun! Now.....if only I can find some dress clothes in my closet that aren't maternity and don't make me have 3 butts at once.......
Nap #2
I put Miriam down for her second nap and she cried for only 10 minutes off and on. She is quiet now, but I am not sure if she's sleeping. I will go check.....
She's alseep! But, she is fighting it. I won't hold my breath. I have a feeling this will be a quick 20 minute cat nap. But, the cry time seems to be significantly shorter the 2nd attempt in the day. She gets so tired that I think it is harder for her to fight it. She has these little bags under her eyes.
My stubborn little girl.

Oh so tired
Miriam was so completely exhausted by the end of yesterday. Her eyes were half mast and she didn't have very much energy. It's hard to be that stubborn! ha ha. You would think that she would sleep a long, peaceful night last night. But, no go. I am tired.
This morning I put her in her crib for her nap at 10:48 and she cried/fussed/grunted for 40 minutes. I went in a couple times, calmed her down and got her to smile. I brought her downstairs at the end of the 40 minutes when she was so wound up that she would have never fallen asleep. I have never heard her calm herself down when she gets that bad. She has never been a fan of her car seat, so we have heard those screams MANY times.
I keep repeating a mantra I got out of one of the books I read: "Mama, not baby, sets the naptime schedule. Mama, not baby, decides when naptime is over."
It has only been one day and I am already close to giving up. I have talked to a LOT of moms. Some moms tell me that their kids never got on a schedule or that they just let them nap in their swing, bouncy, etc. And then some moms tell me that their kids took a long time, but they eventually got it. I feel like I need to give this a fair shot before I say "she just won't go down for a nap." But, my overall goal is to get her to fall asleep on her own. I really think that she would sleep better during the night if she could sooth herself back to sleep when she wakes instead of calling for Mama.
I am going to be consistent about putting her down twice a day. Maybe she will at least learn that each time she goes down, she is going to be left there for awhile and maybe she will give up and go to sleep eventually. Maybe. Just maybe.

And yet again....
....she wakes up. This time after 32 minutes. So, it's much better than the previous times today. But, this is so not fun. It is really hard. I HATE listening to her cry and thinking of her lying there wondering where her mama is. Logically, I know that she won't remember this time, but I can't help but thinking she will hate me.
Improvement
Last nap of the day. I put her down and she screamed immediately. She knows what's going on now.
She only screamed for 5 minutes and then there was silence. ahhhh. I went up to check on her just in case and she was lying in her crib looking totally and utterly defeated. Poor sweetheart.
She is now sleeping again and it's been about 11 minutes. Progress.

Short lived
She slept for 25 minutes and then woke up screaming so hard that she made herself choke. After about 5 minutes of the screaming, I went in and got her up. It was short lived, but she fell asleep.
And now I will do it all over again in about a half hour. Sweet.
This will be worth it, right?
And now I will do it all over again in about a half hour. Sweet.

Small victory!
Success! After 20 LOOOONG minutes of absolute blood curdling screams, Miriam finally fell asleep. Going on 13 minutes of sleep now.
My neighbors must hate me.
My neighbors must hate me.
Attempt #2
After 55 minutes of fussiness and/or crying done by little Miss Miriam, I got her out of her crib. She was so wound up by that point that I know she was never going to nap. I even went in a couple times, picked her up and patted her back. She calmed down, but the minute I put her back in her crib, she went to a high pitched wail in no time at all. There wasn't even a wind up period.
I called my mom and got some advice and now, after a bit of cuddle and play time, we are on attempt #2. I nursed her, burped her and changed her diaper and put her back in her crib. She has been crying for 10 minutes. She is SO tired. When I pick her up, her eyes are about half open. But, she is also SO stubborn. This is going to be tough.

Alteration to Phase One
I have already made an alteration to phase one of my mission. I keep going back and forth about whether to put her down for her nap in her bouncy seat or her crib. I want to make it as easy a transition as possible, but I don't want to form more new habits that I would just have to work at breaking after I am trying to destroy these other ones. That seems so counterproductive.
So, today, I am sitting and typing this in the rocking chair in Miriam's bedroom. She is crying in her crib. She has been crying or doing various types of fussing for the past 46 minutes exactly. Yep. She is a willful child. But, I am determined to not let this discourage me. I am going to continue to put her down at the same times everyday from now until March 11th. I don't know how long this will take, but I am really hoping she gets it soon.

Not Me! Monday
Inspired by Mckmama.
Here are several things that I definitely did not do this past week.
I did not have Q Doba 3 times when people offered to buy it for me. I would never eat out that many times in a week rather than make something at home. And I definitely wouldn't eat at the SAME restaurant more than once in a week. How weird do you think I am?
I did not have to hold back the tears when I finally went to the Longmont public library to get a library card only to be told that I have to have something that shows my current address (which I didn't have). That would be something so silly to cry over, for goodness sakes. I mean, just because I have been waiting and waiting to get a library card, haven't been able to leave the house at all because someone slashed my tires a few weeks ago, have had to miss several MOPS meetings and Le Leche League, that is absolutely no reason to cry.
After I was informed I could not get a library card, I did not call my husband and cry to him about how I would never be able to get one now because I didn't have something with my current address on it. That would be overly dramatic. And while I was speaking to him, I most certainly did not dig through the glove compartment to find a bill or bank receipt or our proof of insurance card. And when I found said item, I did not practically skip back into the library and wave it over my head in victory, causing the librarian to stifle a grin.
This past week, I did not spend over three hours cleaning out our refrigerator. I did not fill up a trash bag full of moldy "food" or 3 bags full of empty bottles to recycle from the massive amounts of expired condiments I disposed of. That would be totally disgusting.
And after I cleaned out all the gross-ness, I most certainly did not spend an additional hour and a half taking out the shelves and scrubbing all the gross gook off of them. I did not have to use a knife to scrape some unknown items off the glass and I did not almost gag. Nope, not me.
I did not eat several variations of bean dishes for 2 days straight and then wonder why Miriam was so fussy. Could it be that her little tummy was so full of gas that she could send herself to the moon if she weren't strapped into her bouncy seat? No, that definitely was not me.
Thus concludes this week's unmentionables.

Phase One of Mission: Impossible?
Phase one has begun.
After much thought over the last few days as to how I am going to implement this in the least stressful way (for me) as possible, I have come up with the following plan.
Phase one: From now until March 11th (her six month birthday), I am going to put her down for her naps at 10 AM and 2 PM. For this first phase, she will be in the living room in her bouncy seat. I will be in the vicinity, but won't be acknowledging her. I will use the sound machine and attempt to allow her to fall asleep on her own. She usually wakes up when I put her down after nursing her, so at this point, I am not going to do a scheduled 'wake time' because I am essentially trying to teach her to fall asleep herself. Later, when she has mastered this, I will do the wake time. I don't want to throw too much on her plate at one time.
***on a side note, I did this this morning and it worked wonderfully. I was quite pleased and Daniel was proud. : )
So, that is what I will be working on for the next few weeks before I start my 21 days of forming her new habit. Keep us in your prayers and feel free to ask me how it's going so I can be held accountable. It may not seem like a big deal, but it is very tempting to just continue to allow her to fall asleep in the swing for her naps and when I'm nursing her at night. It would be so much easier. *sigh* But, alas......I must be a grown up mommy and try and teach her something.

Mission: Impossible?
The mission, should I choose to accept it, is to try and get my baby girl to go from this:

Without having to do any of this:

to this:
Without having to do any of this:
It is going to be a long, hard journey and I am working on a detailed battle plan to assist me as well as hold myself accountable to completing it.
You see, like many new parents, we had an idea of how we wanted to handle situations like this before we became parents. We read the books. We had a battle plan. We hopped on the Babywise train and LOVED the book. So much that we ultimately chose our pediatrics office specifically with the intention of implementing Babywise. Then Miriam was born.
And if you have been a reader of my blog for longer than a month, you are well aware that we were blessed with a child who has fabulous lungs and trouble digesting. Not a fun combination.
When she was about 2 weeks old, I asked her doctor if now was an ideal time to begin getting her on the feed time, wake time, nap time schedule. He looked at me and uttered words that reinforced me as a mother and made my feelings of inadequacy dissipate. He said, "Throw Babywise out the window. When you have a sick baby, you need to do everything in your power to make her feel better and enable you to survive."
He validated what I already sensed.....that there is no such thing as "crying it out" with a colic baby. You simply try to get them to feel better and sleep so that you could sleep and have the energy to start it all over again in the morning.....or in our case, the energy to continue it well through the night. It was wonderful advice because although I truly desired to get Miriam on a schedule, the thought of attempting it in the midst of acid reflux, colic and postpartum depression not only exhausted me, but filled me with such a dread that I wondered if I would ever enjoy being a mother.
So, that's what we did. We survived. We set up a bedtime routine very early on, so she at least would know when she was expected to go to sleep for the night. And we established a nap schedule during the day using whatever "sleep props" worked for her and us.
She started sleeping through the night at about 3 months and did it consistently for several weeks. Her colic disappeared at 4 months and her acid reflux is under control with the help of (a very expensive) medicine.
So, here we are today. 5 months old. And she is getting up almost every two hours again. I want to say to her, " What? Are you new here? This is not how we do things." But, I know that it is in part due to the fact that in order to survive during those early days of newborn hell, Miriam was rocked to naptime dreams in her swing and quieted to sleep at night at my breast. It's time to change that.
I dusted off our parenting books that we fawned over while she was in utero and re-read them to try and decide the best way to go about this. Because, like mentioned before, we did love Babywise, however in our journey up to this point I made a few discoveries about myself as a mother that completely surprised me and those who know me best (mainly my mother and my husband). And if you know me at all, you might be surprised to learn this revelation as well. Are you ready???
I am a total attachment parenting, demand feeding, breastfeeding loving, Le Leche League member-ing, womb re-creating, don't like to hear my baby crying MAMA!
Seriously.
Now, while I don't agree with Dr. Harvey in Happiest Baby on the Block that babies were not meant to be born at nine months, I do find many of his calming techniques extremely helpful. Miriam hated to be swaddled, so it obviously isn't the 'end all' cure to colic. Even if we did it "correctly" as instructed in his video.
I should also point out that although I don't like to hear my baby cry, I don't pick her up every single time she whines. I don't think it will kill her or affect her emotional attachment to me down the road if I don't attend to her every complaint.
Those of you who have used Babywise are probably thinking at this point....."What in tarnation is she going to use in Babywise if she is all those things she listed above?"
Welp, here is what I am going to do. I am still going to demand feed. And I am still going to do much of the attachment parenting. But, I am going to have clear nap times scheduled for my little one. She is going to go down at the same time everyday WITHOUT her swing and WITHOUT me nursing her to sleep. I will probably still use the sound machine because I don't want to rip the rug right out from under her, causing her to feel like her Mama just completely rocked her little world. I know she won't remember it when she is older, but I most certainly will. I still remember my labor and everyone told me I would forget. I didn't. And it sucked.
I am also going to implement the feed time, wake time, nap time schedule. This will be determined by the times in which I choose for her to go down for her naps.
And, I will admit this to the entire blogging world......Miriam is still sleeping in our room. Not in our bed, but in the pack'n'play in our room. I like it. No....I LOVE it. But, I know that it is getting to be time to 'grow her up' and put her in her own room at night. This presents another problem. I am completely and utterly terrified of SIDS. I pray about it every night and all day long, but I am still afraid that I will become the one case that everyone talks about in hushed, regretful tones.
So, I am hoping that with our tax check, I can convince my husband to purchase this Cadillac of baby monitors I found on Amazon.
As soon as I get my battle plan completed, I am going to tackle this Mission and hope that it is not impossible. I am determined and I am going to pray like crazy. Will you join me, please?
I will let you know when it begins and I am going to document it for 21 days. Why 21? Well, in the Bible, it says that.....ha. Just kidding. I chose 21 days because they say that 21 days is how long it takes us to form a new habit. And I am not sure who "they" are, but "they" are pretty smart people, I think. I mean, "they" also say that "Laughter is the best medicine" and that seems to be a pretty accurate statement.
So, friends, become my prayer warriors. Each day when you put your baby down wide awake and they drift off peacefully on their own for their nap or bedtime (they all do that, don't they???) think of me and offer up a prayer for the crying that is most certainly going on in my house. I will try not to cry too loud as to not wake up Miriam.

Not Me! Monday
Inspired by Mckmama.
This past week, I did not do only 2 loads of laundry even though you can not even walk in my laundry room and I most certainly did not fold it in 2 different rooms and then leave it piled in each room. And it is absolutely not still sitting there. I am a fabulous housekeeper and I always have clean clothes in our drawers and nothing lying on the floor of the laundry room.
I did not wear a pair of jeans that were so big for me that they fell off gradually as I walked. That would pose a dangerous risk to myself and my baby daughter as I carried her places. Not to mention look totally stupid.
And finding that my post pregnancy jeans were too big, I did not squeeze myself into 2 pairs of my pre-pregnancy jeans and wear them out in public even though there was a significant amount of "muffin" spilling out over the top simply because it was the first time I could get them up over my thighs and butt. (although if I DID do that, I also may have worn my pregnancy Bella Band to suck it all in....)
I did not "clean" my house by throwing everything in Miriam's room. That would completely defeat the purpose and would just make more of a mess for me to clean up later. Why would I do that?
For my husband's birthday, I absolutely did not draw on one of his beaters and then wear it around in public in honor of his birthday and I absolutely did not make a matching one for Miriam. And I am not too lazy to post pictures tonight.
I also did not promise that his all guys birthday poker night would be completely "girl free" and then proceed to decorate the whole main floor with party decorations relating to playing cards and poker. hee hee. That would be so girly.

Not Me! Monday-Tuesday
Inspired by Mckmama.
So, obviously, I did not wait until Tuesday to do my Not Me! Monday post. I am completely organized and motivated and would never even think of putting something off when in the title of the task, it actually states the day I intend to post it. Nope. I would never do that. It would look stupid.
I most certainly did not throw a fit when I hauled my baby out to the car, packed up her stroller and drove 20 feet only to get out and find that 2 of my tires had been slashed with a knife. Nope, not me. I am patient and loving and stayed completely calm.
And I did not let off a slew of anger induced words, asking why the vandals couldn't have slashed the tires of a Mercedes or Lexus on the same street because obviously they could afford to replace said slashed tires.
And following the vandalism, I did not immediately narrow down two groups of immature boys that I suspected of the act. That would be a rush to judgement. Just because there is a group of middle schoolers that loiter at the park across the street everyday after school until 5:30, does not mean that they are causing problems. In fact, I am sure that they are holding an after-school prayer group in which they pray for their classmates and share the love of Jesus.
I did not park myself at my living room window each day like a spy, watching the college boys across from me skateboard and smoke on their porch. Because they most certainly would never do anything so horrible as to slash a stay-at-home mother's tires; her only connection to the outside world and adult company, thereby causing her to go insane with stir craziness.
I did not take my daughter on about a thousand walks last week when I discovered that she loved them and would be quiet the entire time, giving me a much needed break from having to entertain her all the live long day. I would never do that just so I didn't have to interact with her. She is sweet and lovely and I am perfectly happy being at her beck and call 24/7.
And I did not take about a million pictures of her in her stroller when she was having so much fun on the walks......

I did not force Miriam's rolly polly body into an outfit that is too small for her simply because it is her Daddy's favorite outfit. And she most certainly didn't have fun in it anyway.....

I also did not attempt to replicate my favorite picture of my baby brother, Isaac, naked on the changing table.(and I did not just describe the picture of my brother to the entire blogging world. He would kill me.) Such moments come natural in our house and absolutely none of our pictures are posed.
This past week, I also did not give my husband a lecture regarding leaving a pan warming up on the stove and how it could burn the pan and quite possibly ruin it.......only to do that EXACT thing 2 days later. The smoke alarms most certainly did not go off in my house and I did not take the following picture of my house enveloped in smoke.....

Not Me! Monday
Inspired by Mckmama.
Here is a list of things that I absolutely did not do this past week.
I did not eat my weight in chocolate candies this past week. I still have baby weight to get off, for goodness sakes. Why would I sabotage myself in that way?
I did not clean the same rooms in my house day after day after day, thus making no progress in the whole "cleaning the whole house" goal. It would be so silly not to just pick up after myself and do a different room every single day.
This last week, when Miriam woke up early in the morning, I did not just lean over to her bed and pick her up and lift her next to me by the front of her sleep blanket that she was zipped into. I would never be that lazy when I could just sit up in bed and pick her up. She can hold her head up, so it's not like she was flopping around when I lifted her. Don't worry.
Speaking of Miriam, I did not leave her in an outfit that had poop on it simply because I was too lazy to go upstairs to her room and get a clean one. (Oh wait.....here is another one....I did not leave all of her clean clothes in the dryer the entire week because I was too lazy to go downstairs and put them in a basket. Nor are they still in the dryer as I type this. Come on people. Give me some credit. )
This week, when Miriam was incredibly fussy, I did not swing her up on my back in the pack while I did chores. And she most certainly did not have an imprint on her face from falling asleep in this position:

While we are still on the subject of my daughter and her fussiness, there is no way in heck that I unbuckled myself in the car, climbed into the backseat, draped my body over Miriam's car seat and nursed her while my mom drove in order to squelch her screaming. That is incredibly dangerous. (And I most certainly do not have big enough boobs to do that. They would have to be ginormous in order to do something like that........)
A couple of months ago, I was finally able to fit my wedding ring back on my fat finger. This week was certainly not the first time I was able to remove it. I have definitely been diligent about losing my baby weight.
Thank you for reading. Please come again.
